Great Pop Rock With Theory of Flight
Bruce Von Stiers
Theory of Flight is a pop rock band whose roots are in Las Vegas. They have a new album out that is sure to
propel them to the top of the charts. The album is Within Reach and has thirteen songs that have definite radio appeal. It is being released on Blue Beet Records. The album was produced by band member Vince Casas. It was mixed by industry veteran Mark Needam who’s worked with greats like Fleetwood Mac and My Chemical Romance.
The band has six members. They are Beau Hodges, Vince Casas, Joey McMahon, Tyler Williams,
Stephen Goodrum and John Colombo. John is on keys and does some vocals. Stephen is on guitar and
vocals. Tyler is the drummer and also does some vocals. Joey is the band’s bass player. Vince is on lead
guitar and provides vocals. And Beau is the lead vocalist.
Additional personnel on the album were Stephen Chou, Kacy Burleson, Fernando Valenzuela, Kristen
Markell, Mark Needam, Alyssa Shaver and Mike Lozo. Stephen is on keys and programming, while Kacy
plays viola. Then there is Fernando on violin and Mark on tambourine. Alyssa and Mike are responsible for the
clapping sounds on the album and Kristen does the female vocals you will hear.
Head bopping power pop music backs good vocals on the first song. The song is called Sinister.
Not The Only is the second song. It starts out fast then slows down a bit to become a moderate paced tune.
Goodbye Tonight is a pretty decent love ballad.
Burn On is mild but kind of an aching pop rock ballad.
Things pick back up with the song Worthless Symphonies. The music of the song sort of reminded me of a
short lived faith based band called Offering that I had a chance to see in concert a few years back.
Spinning is a mild love ballad with great orchestral sounding music.
The band keeps mixing things around on the album. After the mildness of Spinning, they follow up with a
moderate pop anthem called Set The Night On Fire. There is some pretty decent guitar in the song.
Speaking of decent guitar, there is some killer rock slanted guitar in the song Can’t You See.
Throwing things back into the pop mode,This Night’s For You has a head bopping beat.
There might have been a strong U2 influence in the slow and gentle tune One Last Call.
Like You Do has an ‘80’s hair band rocker feel to it.
Next To You starts out like a U2 song. Then it moves into a slow and endearing ballad.
The album ends with an extended version of the song.
Power pop with infused rock is how I might describe the music of Theory of Flight. The vocals are fluid, full of
emotion and easy to listen to. The backing music moves between rock and pop effortlessly, melding together
for a great sound.
Within Reach is a really good album. If you want to hear the next great pop rock band, grab a copy of the
album.

THEORY OF FLIGHT, “Within Reach” (theoryofflightmusic.com)
Beau Hodges sings of being a small dude in a big city.”I’m afraid this town has gotten me down,” the Theory of Flight frontman confesses on an album opening “Sinister.” “With my last breath, I’ll finally make it out,” he later adds, giving voice to a desperation that seldom manifests itself in his band’s largely buoyant sound, which is powered by big, bright synth lines, breathy vocals and ringing guitars. If this bunch is eager to escape Sin City, “Within Reach” might help them achieve that end, with huge sounding, radio-ready rockers such as “Worthless Symphonies,” with its dramatic keys, growling guitars and rolling thunder drums, paired with the kind of starry-eyed ballads meant to soundtrack slow dances at proms the world over.
It has all been done before, for sure, but Theory of Flight isn’t out to break the mold as much as break out of here.
