Often in my profession I am referred to as “Princess Gloom and Doom” even though I have a disgustingly sunny disposition. The loving nickname comes from my preference for music that tends to make most people want to either slit their wrists or shoot zombies in a video game. So you can imagine my surprise when Theory of Flight’s album “Within Reach,” rife with upbeat tempos and a dance-party flavor, reached my ears and I found myself turning up the volume.

I imagine these Las Vegas boys will be plastered on bedroom walls in no time. Their heartfelt lyrics and the unique and titillating vocals of Mr. Beau Hodges invade you immediately upon listening. The rhythmic talents of Mr. Tyler Williams quicken the pace and instill in listeners an annoying desire to get up and dance (Princess Gloom and Doom does not boogie…at least not when people are present). The band’s lead guitarist, Vince Casas, meshes so well with their rhythm guitarist, Stephen Goodrum, that it’s almost impossible to comprehend but oh so much fun to hear! In addition to those danceable drums and killer guitars, John Colombo sprinkles in some keyboards and Joey McMahon provides just enough bass to make you want more.
All in all, Theory of Flight is a winner. From the second that the opening track, “Sinister,” fills your speakers you won’t be able to turn down the volume. Instead you’ll find yourself hitting the Repeat Album option so that even when the closer, “Next To You,” breaks your heart a little, the deliciousness will continue. This sextuplet has given us something new to appreciate and has reminded me that just because an album isn’t laced with distortion and double bass doesn’t mean that it isn’t a worthy listen. So grab your ladies, gents, and prepare for her to be amazed that your musical taste has a softer side (but not so soft that you’ll both fight the urge to throw up in your mouths a little…that would just be bad).
